Solutions for Nobody's Children

Solutions for Nobody's Children

bad federation proudly presents “Solutions for nobody’s children,” a series of five posters and a wayward filing cabinet in Dundee, Scotland. The posters are a quilt of cuttings – the solutions to last week's problems from the back section of the newspaper where debt collectors and bureaucratic bounty hunters are listed. There are finished sudokus and crosswords puzzles completed with geometric accuracy. The spelling is correct, and the circled letters spell “pity” and “panic”. There is a S-shaped track and word syphers laid out in plain sight. Here, the puzzle and process become secondary to the result. The journey is diminished as the destination triumphs for once, and everything your parents told you means nothing anymore; here and now, in is an inevitable sum of winners and losers. These posters can, therefore, be read as reverse cards, embracing the know-it-alls and the embarrassing anticlimax of problem-solving. They bypass a sense of achievement in favour of the cheats, noting that there is nothing really left to do but to sit with an internal morality clause, inalienable fates, and a question: Have you been bad? Now, the nay-sayers will call this nihilism, and some Quakers will bleach this in optimism. Neither of which is welcome. We, the bad federation, harbour the Christmas-themed ultimatum for its ability to distil the hot moral mystique of the rat-race and hum-drum towards membership in something new. The answer is a coin toss and a calculation.

If the answer to the question is yes,

If your answer is no, we suggest you reconsider. Realism, please. Sit a moment longer and note that inflation already took your gifts, and the Grinch came two years and two seconds ago. Sinners can be saints if they are like us and our cast – noted and devoted.
