Especially at this time of year

"Especially at this time of year"

A quintet of graphic art pieces explore themes of the overlapping and repeating of historical narratives which touch both the global scale and individual lives within them.

In this look at the Incarnation story, it feels unclear whether we are looking at a retelling, a modernisation or things which are present in both the 1st century New Testament account and the 21st century.

This is a time of year where Christmas is celebrated for many and often focused on themes of "Goodwill to all men" and the ideas of "Light coming into darkness". So acts which run counter to these ideals, are often prefaced with the thought that these things, beheld as net negatives, are unusually so during this period.

Sophie pushes back at this narrative suggesting that both now and during that first Christmas, humanity experienced these things. Tragedy, injustice and loss have always been horribly present and most often precipitated by the governing classes against its citizens..

It's the perennial human condition. We just notice the contrast more when looking at the light. In this vein, each backdrop in the quintet gets progressively darker in colour saturation, until left with the night sky of the final piece.
